The
History of Mardi Gras
No
one really knows exactly how Mardi Gras was started. Many other
cities have similar celebrations and it is referred to as Carnival
in Rio and other spots in the Caribbean and South America. Some
people trace it to the Romans, whose pagan orgies were held
during the spring season. New Orleanians have since formed numerous
secret societies that have served many charitable and social
functions. They often help unite the city with their parade's
political themes.
